South Africa does not have a leadership crisis.

It has a trust deficit.

Over the past two decades, South Africans have witnessed repeated failures of leadership across politics, business, state institutions, labour and civil society.

The result?

People no longer trust leaders because of their title.

They trust leaders because of their behaviour.

Every leader carries an invisible trust account. Some actions make deposits. Others make withdrawals. The challenge is that most leaders underestimate how quickly withdrawals accumulate.

Trust Deposits

Leaders build trust when they demonstrate:

✔ Consistency – doing what they said they would do.

✔ Accountability – owning decisions, especially when things go wrong.

✔ Transparency – communicating openly, honestly and clearly.

✔ Competence – making sound decisions and delivering results.

These actions may seem small in isolation. Over time, however, they create credibility. And credibility is what gives leaders influence.

Trust Withdrawals

Trust is lost when leaders:

✖ Break promises.

✖ Say one thing and do another

✖ Avoid accountability.

✖ Fail to address poor behaviour.

✖ Make decisions that contradict the values they promote.

Every withdrawal chips away at confidence. Eventually, people stop believing the message because they no longer believe the messenger.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

Today’s employees are not looking for perfect leaders.

They are looking for authentic ones. Leaders who acknowledge mistakes. Leaders who make difficult decisions fairly. Leaders whose actions align with the values displayed on the boardroom wall.

In a world where trust is increasingly scarce, credibility has become a competitive advantage. The organisations that will thrive over the next decade will not necessarily be those with the best strategies. They will be those led by people their employees trust.

Because trust changes everything.

It influences engagement. It shapes culture. It determines whether people choose to stay, contribute and perform.

The Question Every Leader Should Ask

If trust is the currency of leadership, are you making more deposits than withdrawals?

Leadership is not measured by the authority you hold. It is measured by the trust you earn.

At Pinnacle HR, we believe that sustainable organisational performance is built on leadership credibility, strong cultures and trust-based workplaces.
